värtan energy plant, kvv8

Status      Completed

Year         2016

Client       AB Fortum Värme co-owned with the City of Stockholm

This project is the result of an invited competition in which we were asked to design a new combined biofuel power and district heating plant to supply the city of Stockholm with clean energy. The site is centrally located with housing, offices and harbor areas all close by, which required a modern and aesthetic response for a highly visible, efficient and environmentally-friendly addition to the urban environment. Our response included a curving façade constructed of terra cotta elements that wrap around the building, while offering glimpses of the inner workings from certain vantage points.

The project Värtan Bioenergy CHP-plant is a finalist in two categories at the MIPIM Awards 2017; Best industrial & logistic development, and Best innovative green building.

Storängstorget (the public square in Storäng) has a new urban addition – a small shed that houses both an electrical substation as well as a pump for the square’s new fountain. The building takes the form of an asymmetrical volume in corten steel with a sculptural wood-rib facade that doubles as a generous seating bench oriented toward the square.

This pump building has been formed as a part of the landscape, like a rocky outcropping in the park. A large part of the technical equipment is actually buried under the building and is connected to the district heating system. The primary facades and portions of the roof surface are made of corten steel and the remaining part of the roof is covered in grass. The main façade is covered in fiber-cement panels with a text that describes the functions within and how energy comes from the sun, all the way to the surrounding apartment buildings.

A new pump station for district heating has been stealthily placed along the eastern slope of Sjöviksbacken. The facade of site-cast concrete is divided by a horizontal ”fissure” that exposes a warm, rust-colored surface of wooden ribs. The edge of this fissure provides places to sit, while the roof is planned as a new playing field – a part of a new park play area for all of the families that are moving into the area.

This building is a part of Värtaverkets new biofuel cogeneration plant. Here, wood chips are transferred from boat to trucks or trains, past the sift and crush building and finally to an underground fuel depot.

The shape of the building with its closed ends and open sides of Linit channel-glass accentuate the movement of the trains and trucks that travel through the building.

In this building, which is a part of Värtaverkets new biofuel cogeneration plant, left-over material from the forest industry in the form of wood chips is processed before being transported to an underground fuel depot in wait for incineration.

The base of the building, composed of dark-tinted concrete, reflects its functional content through a series of openings, while the upper portion of the building is made up of pre-fab elements of lighter colored concrete. A vertical ‘gap’ above the entrance accentuates the elevator shaft through its orange colored accent. The cubic form of the building expresses its role as an important node in the energy production process. From the top of the building extends a conveyor belt to the ash silos where waste-products after incineration are processed.

In this building, which is a part of Värtaverkets new biofuel cogeneration plant, ash from the boiler is processed. It is transported to the two silos (one for fly-ash and the other for bottom-ash) via conveyor belts and an elevator located in the adjacent Sift and Crush building. The processed waste is transferred to train or truck below the silos.

The access portals have been made extra high in order to accentuate the movement through the building. Its expressive steel construction is kept in the same orange color as other parts of the energy complex. This construction can be glimpsed through the Linit channel-glass openings in the façade. The metal façade keeps the same gray scale as other buildings in the area. Towards the water a smaller building contains support functions including storage and a compressor. The crane that transfers material to the pier can be serviced from the roof.

gradient - cogeneration plant (combined heat and power station) in uppsala

Status      Competition entry

Client        Vattenfall

We participated in the invited competition to design a new cogeneration plant for the city of Uppsala. The proposal can be described through its three main themes: silhouette, the family, and in between spaces.

The proposal changes the city’s skyline (silhouette) - reaching towards the sky, above the horizon. It does this by being firmly anchored to the ground and gradually fading upwards. The four main functions of the building are each given their own individual volume, together creating a family of shapes. This enables each shape to adapt to and enclose its own specific technical requirements, without affecting the overall composition. The four volumes are separated by between spaces that provide glimpses through and break down the overall scale of the structure.

district heating facility for lidingö

Status     Completed

Year         2012

Client       AB Fortum Värme together with the City of Stockholm

The district heating facility for Lidingö has been clad with a new facade and iron railing to better relate to a new housing development nearby. New demands are being put on our energy infrastructure – both in terms of more environmentally-responsible energy production, as well as how they visually interact with their urban neighbors.

WTE, or Waste-to-Energy is a method of burning waste to produce both district heating and electricity, instead of the traditional methods of waste disposal that mean waste-sites and consequent contamination of the environment. Our winning proposal quickly earned the nickname – Beetle, because of its outer shell that can be likened to a carapace. This protective layer composed of aluminum and glass provides a semi-enclosed environment for workers to access the various parts of the facility.
